To all our members, our community and friends and family,

The last few days, Americans have marched, rallied and protested in response to the killing of George Floyd and the ongoing problem of unequal justice. There is so much anger and hate around the country, amplified by the absence of leadership from the White House to bring unity and aid. President Barack Obama said, “The death of a black man, George Floyd, in police custody, shouldn’t be ‘normal’ in 2020 America. It can’t be ‘normal.’ If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better.”

Together, we can bring about change. While protesting and civil disobedience puts a spotlight on racial injustice, we must channel this energy to upend the status quo, fix our laws and close the disparities in communities of color. Most importantly, we need to do our part to elect the right officials at all levels of government.

The Asian Pacific Islander community cannot stay silent on issues of race. It is important for us as allies to speak out and remind the world that Black Lives Matter. The Asian Pacific Islander community throughout its history in the US has not been immune to racism, discrimination and hatred. While we do not share the same experiences, we stand in solidarity. Now is the time to use your voice to amplify the voices of our Black community and make change happen. The Edwin M. Lee Asian Pacific Democratic Club board and members will continue to support this struggle for justice.

We extend our love and support in these dark times.
